Women's Medical Fund, Inc.

Women's Medical Fund, Inc., is a non-profit charitable organization assisting Wisconsin women who are seeking to end an unwanted pregnancy and cannot afford the entire cost of an abortion. Since 1976, the Fund has helped more than 15,000 needy women. We have assisted many women who are victims of domestic battery, of rape and incest, and those who are homeless, disabled, addicted or ill. Several times a year we assist women who are carrying grossly abnormal fetuses. Girls and women from age 11 to 47 have been helped. Some women assisted have had as many as 12 children.

Like all women, a low-income woman has an abortion because she is trying to do her best for herself and her family. Her decision is based on the circumstances of her life.

Women seeking assistance must demonstrate financial need. The Women's Medical Fund usually grants or loans up to one-half the cost of an abortion, although in tragic cases more money often is granted. Her application to the Fund determines financial need, and the woman is asked to pay as much as possible herself. Fund checks are made payable to the clinic or physician after the abortion has been performed to make sure the money is used for the intended purpose. A typical grant or loan is $200 for an early abortion or $300-$400 for a second trimester abortion. Some women, of course, need as little as $30 to $50 to complete their funding. An occasional recipient repays the Fund in part or in full.

The Women's Medical Fund is completely volunteer--no money is used for salaries, rent or overhead. Volunteers answer calls and respond to requests for assistance. Phone, printing, and postage costs are donated. Over 99.5% of all donations go directly to fund poor women's abortions.

Abortion in Wisconsin: legal but hard to access

The right to choose an abortion is meaningless without access to abortion services.

Although abortion currently is legal, increasingly restrictive laws are limiting access for all women. Poor women, unable to pay for an abortion, are effectively denied access to complete health care services.

Federal and state government funds cannot be used to pay for abortions in Wisconsin; most health insurance does not cover abortions.

Wisconsin has among the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation. Poor and rural women are particularly hard hit by these laws, especially the law mandating two visits to a clinic, 24 hours apart, which increases the costs of obtaining an abortion.

Wisconsin has limited abortion clinic services, located only in Milwaukee, Madison and Appleton; often women must pay for travel, childcare or overnight accommodations in addition to using scarce resources to pay the medical costs.

Women's Medical Fund, Inc. needs your help

Every year the Women's Medical Fund reluctantly turns away at least 100 women because they cannot find their part of the cost of an abortion.

Your financial support will directly impact the life of a woman in need and help ensure that every child is a wanted child.

Please consider a tax-deductible contribution to the Women's Medical Fund, Inc., today. Your donation will be greatly appreciated and put to immediate use.
